10 Commandments for a Properly Wasted Summer

Waste Your Summer Properly

They taught us that summer was for making the most of it.

Reading. Travelling. Learning new skills. Coming back in September as a shinier, better, more productive version of ourselves.

We'd like to suggest the exact opposite.

1. THOU SHALT NOT PLAN

Leave room for the "fancy it?", the lunches that somehow turn into dinner, and the plans that just happen.

Honour the afternoon nap, the long post-beach shower, the switched-off phone and the glorious words: "I'm out of the office."

2. THOU SHALT ROCK THE DAD BOD

Show off your belly, your grey hairs, your receding hairline and your scars without shame or permission.

Celebrate the body that's carried you all the way to this summer, then proudly parade it along the beach or up and down the seafront every single day.

3. THOU SHALT BE LAZY

Confuse your bed, the sofa, the hammock and the beach towel.

Walk slower.

Listen longer.

Sleep deeper.

Turn up late to almost everything. (Nothing that really matters ever starts on time anyway.)

And when someone asks what you've done today, answer proudly:

"Not much."

4. THOU SHALT LOOK UP

At more sunsets than screens.

More waves than notifications.

More people than Instagram Reels.

Watch more.

Record less.

Take fewer photos (sorry, Bad Bunny), but make a lot more memories.

5. THOU SHALT EAT THE ICE CREAM

And absolutely demolish the hotel buffet, the barbecue and every local speciality you can find.

Let long lunches drift into long conversations until one day they blur into each other.

Ignore meal times, macros and table manners.

(Except the breakfast buffet. Respect the breakfast buffet.)

6. THOU SHALT NOT ENVY SOMEONE ELSE'S SUMMER

The algorithm will try to tempt you.

Don't fall for it.

There'll always be a quieter beach, a fancier hotel or someone with a better tan.

But the best beach is usually the one where you actually found a parking space.

Funny how that never makes Instagram.

7. THOU SHALT DO IT ALL AGAIN

Go back to the same beach bar.

Order the usual.

Then another round.

And another.

Visit the same beach, walk the same promenade, meet the same people, tell the same stories and laugh just as hard every single time.

8. THOU SHALT SWITCH OFF

From work.

From deadlines.

From emails.

Reconnect with card games, aimless conversations and a paella that's still resting.

Spend less time talking about what you should be doing, and more time asking how the people you care about are actually doing.

9. THOU SHALT BE BORED

Watch the stars.

Look for crabs in the rocks.

Stare at a swimming pool for absolutely no reason.

Start books you never finish.

Stop trying to fill every silence and every moment where absolutely nothing is happening.

10. THOU SHALT WASTE YOUR SUMMER

Don't turn your holiday into another self-improvement project.

Don't come back fitter.

Or wiser.

Or more productive.

If you come back exactly the same — or maybe even a little bit worse — but a whole lot less exhausted...

...then you've absolutely nailed summer.

IN SHORT...

The obligation to "make the most of summer" is officially cancelled.

You've spent the last eleven months trying to optimise every minute of your life.

Maybe July and August aren't for that.

Maybe they're for enjoying yourself without posting about it.

Resting without feeling guilty.

And wasting an outrageous amount of time.

HAPPY SUMMER.

AND WE HOPE YOU WASTE EVERY MINUTE OF IT.
