Solar Memory – Look at My Chest… Tattooed…

It’s not only the songs of your favorite bands that evoke the romance of your adolescent summers. Your skin remembers too. Your rugged little body stores a solar memory—a hidden archive of sun exposure, like tattoos of summers past… Poetic, melancholic, but a clear reminder that every ray counts.

THE SUN NEVER FORGETS. NEITHER DOES YOUR SKIN.

You’ve probably heard it a thousand times: “Your skin has memory.” If one year you got burned, chances are you’ll peel in the same spots the next year. If a spot appeared one summer, it might come back larger the following year. There’s a reason for it: every time you expose yourself to the sun without protection, your skin records the damage in its invisible diary. You might not notice it immediately, but those marks endure—like memories and little traumas from the past.

BUT THE SUN IS LIFE!

Sun advocates argue that our ancestors, like those from Atapuerca, spent all day outdoors without suffering any ill effects. They claim nothing happened—although it’s more likely those early humans were devoured by a tyrannosaurus than diagnosed with melanoma.
The truth is, the sun provides essential Vitamin D—a nutrient many of us are low on, according to our blood tests. In fact, just 10–15 minutes of daily exposure on your arms and face can satisfy your daily requirement.
However, on the flip side, the sun is the leading cause of facial aging—far more so than time itself. It contributes to premature aging, spots, wrinkles, loss of elasticity, and in severe cases, even worse consequences.

“I GOT BURNED AFTER JUST 10 MINUTES IN THE SUN!”

Here are five excuses we’ve all made—and why they still left us with burns:

  • “I was wearing a cap, wasn’t I?”
The sun is relentless, bouncing off surfaces like glass, sidewalks, and especially beach sand. A hat doesn’t fully shield you from the reflective, “bouncing back” effects of the sun on the sand.

  • “I was inside the car.”
UVA radiation penetrates glass and clouds. Even if you’re working next to a window or strolling on a cloudy day (or even under trees), you might be accumulating burns gradually.

  • “It wasn’t even hot!”
Heat and radiation don’t always go hand in hand. A light summer shower or an overcast day can be even worse—since we either don’t notice it or we skip the sunscreen—than a scorching 40°C day in full sun.

  • “I slathered on some cream!”
Come on… you might have been out for four hours like a lizard—splashing in and out of the water, sweating—but if you didn’t reapply every two hours, you’re asking for a burn.

  • “It was only 10 minutes!”
With summer, fair skin, and peak sun hours, even less than five minutes can leave you sizzling.

SO, WHAT DO I DO? AM I A VAMPIRE OR SOMETHING?

Before long, applying sunscreen will be as routine as brushing your teeth twice a day. Until that day, here are some tips you won’t see anywhere else (mostly because legal teams would disagree):

  • Official advice: Apply at least two full fingers’ worth of SPF50 every two hours.

  • Extra tips just for you, because we know you’re a tough cookie who likes a bit of a tan, and we want to save you from major damage:

    • Wear a cap, sunglasses, and a t-shirt whenever possible.

    • If SPF50 feels too greasy, try SPF30. Remember: higher protection means thicker, greasier cream. We’ll let you switch to an SPF30 you like—as long as you promise to reapply frequently.

    • Consider using a tanning lotion in a bottle. There are products like this or this that help you get a tan without affecting your melanin—100% safe and effective.

    • When you’re in the sun, keep moving. It may be inconvenient, but it’s a small price to pay compared to turning into a lizard.

    • From noon to 4 p.m.: seek shade and take a siesta. It’s the best time to get out of harm’s way.

    • Visit a dermatologist once a year if you have moles. Think of it as your annual skin cleaning.
