SPF50: Sun Protection, Made for Real Life

SPF50: Sun Protection, Made for Real Life

The sun feels great, lifts your mood and makes everything better.
But it’s also the number one thing that ages your skin — and, in the short term, the reason you end up looking like a lobster after the first bit of sunshine.

Nothing groundbreaking there.

Today, though, we’re going to try and tell you at least one thing you might not know about the one invention that helps avoid all that: sunscreen.

WHAT SPF ACTUALLY MEANS

SPF (Sun Protection Factor) measures protection against UVB rays — the ones that cause sunburn (B for “Burn” 🔥).

The number next to it tells you how much longer it takes your skin to burn compared to wearing no protection at all.

For example:

If you’ve got pale, vampire-level skin and you’d normally burn in 1 minute, SPF20 would theoretically give you around 20 times longer (20 minutes).

But there are two important catches:

1. SPF doesn’t measure UVA protection

UVA rays are the ones responsible for skin ageing (A for “Ageing”).

That’s why, beyond the SPF number itself, there’s one key phrase you should always look for:

“Broad spectrum”

That’s what guarantees protection against both UVA + UVB.

2. SPF is tested in a lab — not in real life

And that difference matters more than most people realise.

SPF IN THE LAB VS SPF IN REAL LIFE

For a product to claim SPF30 or SPF50+, it has to pass an independent laboratory test.

The issue is that these tests happen under pretty controlled conditions:

  • No sweating

  • No touching your face

  • No swimming

  • No moving around constantly

Real life is obviously not like that.

That’s why dermatologists bang on so much about reapplying sunscreen — not because they enjoy repeating themselves, but because protection wears off over time.

This is where loads of sunscreens fall short:

They perform well in the lab, but don’t really fit into everyday life.

THE REAL CHALLENGE: PROTECTION THAT DOESN’T FEEL RUBBISH

Creating a high-SPF formula isn’t just about cranking up the number.

You’ve got to do it without making the experience unbearable — especially if you’re meant to reapply it several times a day.

Right now, most sunscreens fall into three groups:

FILTER TYPE WHAT IT DOES WELL THE DOWNSIDE
Mineral (Physical) Filters Easy to formulate, generally well tolerated White cast + heavy feeling on the skin
Chemical Filters Lightweight textures, invisible finish Can be more reactive on sensitive skin
Combined Filters Better balance between protection and cosmetic feel More difficult to formulate properly

There’s no perfect option.

Every brand is chasing the same thing:

A lightweight, invisible SPF50+ that actually feels good to wear.

But the higher the protection, the harder it is to keep the experience pleasant.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN A GOOD SPF50+

A few things genuinely make a difference:

  • Broad spectrum protection (UVA + UVB) → non-negotiable

  • A texture that works for you and fits naturally into your routine

  • A finish that doesn’t ruin how your skin looks

  • Bonus points if it actually improves it

  • Extra ingredients like niacinamide or antioxidants that add long-term benefits

THE SIWON APPROACH: PROTECTION THAT ADDS SOMETHING

For us, formulating sunscreen isn’t just about ticking the SPF box.

It’s about creating something that genuinely fits into your everyday life.

That’s why, with the new Handsomefyer Sun SPF50, we focused on:

  • Reinforced broad-spectrum protection

  • An optimised blend of filters

  • Lightweight texture with no mask-like feel

  • A finish that instantly improves the look of the skin

  • Ingredients like niacinamide, hyaluronic acid and ginseng

The idea’s simple:

If you like how it looks and how it feels, you’re far more likely to use it every single day.

TL;DR (FOR FUNCTIONALLY LAZY PEOPLE)

  • SPF50 protects against UVB — but that’s not the whole story

  • Always look for “broad spectrum”

  • Lab conditions ≠ real life

  • Texture matters more than people think

  • The best sunscreen is the one you actually use consistently

If putting it on doesn’t feel like a chore, you’re doing alright.

P.S.: This week's blog is proudley sponsored by the return of Handsomefyer SUN. It’s back — with reinforced filters and top marks across the board. Both the theory test (the lab one) and the practical test (real life).
