The Perfect Shower
There are as many types of showers as there are kinds of quickies 👉🏽👌🏽 (speedy, hot, relaxing…) and today we’re breaking down the perfect one — the science of showering (the actual showering, not that other kind 😏): the one that mixes pleasure, health and efficiency in equal parts.
7 TIPS FOR THE PERFECT SHOWER
1. HOW LONG SHOULD IT LAST?
A quick one is always efficient.
Between 5–7 minutes — the time it takes to soft-boil an egg or cook instant ramen — is the sweet spot. Long enough to get properly clean without drying your skin, while saving water and energy (around 50–70 L instead of 120 L for a long shower).
2. HOT, HOTTER… OR COLD ENOUGH TO FREEZE YOUR NIPPLES OFF?
We’re aiming for something just above thermal neutrality — that sweet spot between warm and tepid (around 34–38°C). Hotter dries your skin, colder makes you regret life choices.
Pro tip: cold showers? Brilliant for the brave — circulation boost, immune kick, mental clarity. But honestly, dropping the temp for the last 30–60 seconds does the job perfectly.

3. THE PROPER SANDWICH: WATER – SOAP – WATER
Start with a good 30 seconds of just water. Let it soak in — get properly drenched. You’d be surprised how many people skip the warm-up and go straight in hard (in life and in showers), and then complain about lack of… lubrication (yes, we mean the soap, obvs).
Once you’re fully soaked, a classic debate arises:
- Team “soap straight on skin”, or
- Team “lather in hands first, then apply with palms / sponge / mitt”?
It’s down to preference. The second makes your bar last longer — but only if you replace your sponge every six weeks, unless you fancy scrubbing yourself with something that looks like a carwash mop.
4. PRODUCTS WORTHY OF YOUR FINE BODY
You watch what you eat, avoid itchy fabrics and cheap underwear — same rules apply in the shower. What you put on your skin doesn’t just rinse off; it stays.
That’s why you want quality soaps (ahem): ones that clean without stripping, add a touch of nourishment or active ingredients, and make you actually enjoy applying, reapplying, and catching a whiff of yourself afterwards.

5. THE MOVEMENT: TOP TO BOTTOM, INSIDE TO OUT
Once you’ve got your soap of choice, order matters. Go from head to toe, inside to outside — that way, water runs naturally and carries away the dirt.
Commonly neglected spots: back of the neck and ears, elbows, knees and the soles of your feet. All deserve a bit of attention. Remember: water alone doesn’t do the scrubbing for you.
6. THE MAGIC OF DRYING OFF
Still inside the shower, start by wiping off the water with your hands — like a human windscreen wiper. That alone saves your towel about 60% of the work.
Once out, treat your towel like kitchen roll on spilled coffee: dab, don’t drag. Gentle pats, not sanding your skin down.

7. THE AFTER-SHOWER AFFECTION
Even with the right temperature, good soap and gentle drying, your skin can still flake. Seasonal changes (hello winter) or multiple showers a day can leave you drier than a student fridge.
Enter body lotion — not every day, not every time, but when you need it. It’ll keep your gym gains, pool glow or cycling tan looking its best. Twenty seconds of self-care goes a long way.
8. BONUS TIP: HOW TO LAST LONGER
(We’re still talking soap, promise.)
- Before using: keep it stored in a cool, dry drawer.
- During the shower: don’t leave it under the running water.
- Afterwards: let it dry on a soap dish, not sitting in a puddle.
- And if it’s gone in under a week… either someone’s stealing it or your bathroom’s more humid than a London tube carriage in August.
With all that, you’re more than ready to enjoy your shower to the fullest — a, an, on, under, against and alongside… this is one shower where all the prepositions fit. Solo or accompanied.
