The seven deadly sins of skincare

THE DEADLY SINS OF MEN’S SKINCARE: THE MOST COMMON MISTAKES

AND HOW TO ATONE FOR THEM WITHOUT GUILT OR LOSING WHO YOU ARE

No man was born knowing how to take care of his skin, solve quadratic equations, or tell a spark plug from a screw. What we do, we learn by imitation, intuition, or copying other hominids. That’s why men’s skincare is full of mistakes repeated generation after generation, like deadly sins committed without bad intentions… but with very visible consequences on the face.

Because in skincare, as in life, sinning is easy. The good news? In this case, atonement feels pretty good.

1. PRIDE — BELIEVING YOUR SKIN CAN HANDLE ANYTHING

  • Using body wash or hand soap on your face comes from a very familiar thought: “this doesn’t affect me” or “what difference does it make?” The punishment arrives quickly: tightness, redness, flare-ups (including rosacea), breakouts, and that uncomfortable reptilian look staring back from the mirror.

ATONEMENT is simple and humble: accept that facial skin is more sensitive than the rest of your body and cleanse it with a product made for it, once a day, without punishment or violence.

2. GREED — WANTING RESULTS WITHOUT CONSISTENCY

  • Expecting perfect skin after using a cream for three days and forgetting it for the rest of the month is modern greed in its purest form: wanting a lot with very little commitment. Frustration and the classic “this doesn’t work, comes right after.

ATONEMENT isn’t buying more products. It’s using fewer, properly, and for the amount of time needed to see results. A short, daily men’s facial routine, sustained over time.

3. SLOTH — STARTING BUT NEVER FINISHING

  • Shave and go. Deodorant and go. A splash of water and go. This isn’t conscious minimalism ; it’s laziness.

Just like you wouldn’t stop halfway through foreplay, skincare is about finishing properly: moisturiser, a good serum, protection. Not adding endless steps, but completing what you started.

4. VANITY — CONFUSING APPEARANCE WITH SUBSTANCE

  • Don’t buy the first product that says “for men, comes in a black bottle, or uses tough typography and epic promises. Matte black is not an ingredient.

Look past the footballer’s face on the packaging and focus on enriched, science-backed formulas, textures that feel good, and intention behind the choice. Like SIWON.

5. GLUTTONY — USING MORE THAN YOUR SKIN CAN DIGEST

  • Like spicy food, retinol and other active ingredients can backfire if you overdo it. A little stimulates; too much punishes. Cosmetic gluttony (too much product, too often) leads to retinised, peeling skin and that uncomfortable feeling of having gone too far out of impatience.

ATONEMENT means avoiding binges and following the rule of method: the right amount, the right frequency, no more and no less.

6. ENVY — COVETING OTHER MEN’S MASCULINITY

  • We don’t usually envy someone else’s skin, but their story. The famous “real man” who claims he uses nothing, never takes care of himself, and somehow looks great. Spoiler: it’s not true. Everyone does something; some just don’t talk about it.

Looking after yourself doesn’t take anything away from your masculinity. It gives you back control and self-respect.

7. WRATH — PUNISHING YOUR SKIN WHEN IT DOESN’T BEHAVE

  • Popping pimples, over-exfoliating until it hurts, drying out oily skin with alcohol or skipping moisturiser altogether. Wrath always answers with inflammation, rosacea, more oil and more breakouts.

ATONEMENT is choosing kindness and calm: hydrating is not greasing, and caring is not dominating. Skin isn’t meant to be conquered — it’s meant to be accompanied.

SINNERS, ALL OF US

Let whoever has never sinned cast the first stone. We’re not perfect, and we never will be.
We don’t make these mistakes out of neglect or malice, but because we do the best we know… until we learn to do better.
